Started@Melbourne
Bringing an internal startup culture to the public sphere for Australia’s #1 University
From world-leading experts in their field to startup founders
Before interviewing for my role at the University of Melbourne, I had never drawn the connection between universities and startups. But, of course, it makes sense that the brightest academic minds in fields like medicine, engineering, finance and sustainability are needed at the helm of innovative companies; or as was the case here, starting their own ventures.
My job was to demystify this phenomenon and bring these research-backed startups (who just happened to be finding new cures for cancer, new ways to build roads and new ways to trade money internationally - no biggie) to the fore via an awareness campaign; Started@Melbourne was born. Via flagship showcase events, PR, video and new digital channels and publications, the startups gained the much-needed exposure for further investment - and the universities reputation was modernised. Not to mention the press getting a much-needed a good news story in these trying times.

Translating complex science into digestible formats
Synchron, a University of Melbourne-founded startup, is now competing with Musk’s Neuralink to change the brain-computer-interface (BCI) market. Their device is inserted intravenously into the brain without major surgey, where it can read brain signals to translate thoughts into activity on a computer screen - giving autonomy to the millions of people living globally with communication disabilities.
This is one of a series of videos I produced for the University as part of the Started@Melbourne campaign.
